New York, NY, September 1, 2010 – Summer science fiction blockbuster “Inception” leads the way with nominations in 14 categories for Spike TV’s fifth annual “SCREAM.” Taping on Saturday, October 16 at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles, CA, “SCREAM” is the first and only global event of its kind to honor the luminaries in the sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic book genres, and the actors, creators, icons and pioneers who have influenced and shaped the industry over the past year.

This year’s show will also continue the tradition of featuring exclusive World Premieres from some of the most anticipated movies of 2011. The two-hour extravaganza will premiere on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 19 (9:00–11:00 PM, ET/PT). Presenters and musical performers will be announced shortly.

“True Blood” Unsung Heroes

Posted by Tommy Garrett on Nov 8, 2009

HOLLYWOOD–Nelsan Ellis who portrays the flamboyantly gay Lafayette Reynolds in Alan Ball’s and HBO’s hit vampire series “True Blood” is a distinguished actor who attended the prestigious acting program at Juilliard and in 2008 the actor won from the Satellite award for Best Supporting Actor for his work on “True Blood.” Ellis also won raves when he wrote a play called “Ugly,” an almost autobiographical piece about the devastating effects of domestic abuse, after his sister Alice was shot by her husband in 2002. Nelsan staged the play while a student at Julliard. Received the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts’ Martin E. Segal Award for his efforts.SamTremmell1portrait_1.jpg

Today Ellis is involved with a film called “Secretariat,” which involves the life story of Penny Chenery, owner of the racehorse Secretariat, who won the Triple Crown in 1973. Nelsan is producing and acting in the film, which is set to be released next fall.

From “The Soloist” to “The Express,” Nelsan Ellis is making his mark as an actor and performer in films and has made many television appearances on hit shows like “Veronica Mars,” “Without a Trace” and “Lost.” Fans however have come to love Ellis in the over-the-top fem role as the gay queen of Bon Temps. Ellis embraced the role and throughout his character’s troubled storylines, which have included selling V [vampire’s blood], which is used as an illegal drug in the “True Blood” series and being kidnapped by Eric and used as food for the vampires for weeks before being saved by his childhood friend Sookie, who is played by Oscar winner Anna Paquin, to dealing with the maenad Maryann and her coven of evil doers.

Fans can always count on Ellis’s strong performance and comedic delivery of lines, which even helps to break the tension of the sometimes overly intense yet incredibly written drama. When cousin Tara, played by Rutina Wesley was being abused by her boyfriend Eggs, you could see the pain in Ellis’s eyes and know that because of the turmoil of his sister to domestic violence, Lafayette would never tolerate his cousin being treated that way.

In a show with hunks like Ryan Kwanten, Alexander Skarsgard and Stephen Moyer, unsung heroes like Ellis and Sam Trammell, who portrays shape shifter Sam Merlotte, are important as supporting actors on the cult classic series. Trammell’s career and training is also very prestigious. Trammell made waves and received raves early on in his career when he appeared on the New York stage while building a maverick career in mostly independent features. Sam also attended Brown University where he caught the acting bug in his senior year.

While doing “Ah, Wilderness!” on the Broadway stage in 1997, he received a Tony award nomination the following year for the revival of the great Eugene O’Neill play. His TV work includes,“Numb3rs,” “Judging Amy,” “Cold Case” and Medium,” to name just a few of the prolific actor’s appearances.

However, on the HBO series “True Blood,” Sam is a shape shifter, able to turn into any creature once he sees it, then imprints on the species, which came in handy a lot last season when the evil Maryann was chasing him down the dark road ready to devour him, but he was able to see an owl, imprint on it and quickly change to one and fly away for his own safety. Still battling Maryann, he was able to turn into a fly while in a jail cell, before Maryann could get to him.

Outlandish plots is what Alan Ball‘s “True Blood” is all about. Though these two actors, Sam Trammell and Nelsan Ellis, are such capable and brilliant thespians, they keep the show popular as the unsung heroes who not only save the day, but make fans laugh and cry every week while rooting for them to win over evil.

“True Blood” airs on HBO.

‘Twilight’, ‘True Blood’ take top honors at 2009 Scream Awards

screamawardsLATimes

Stan Lee on a flying balloon barge, Morgan Freeman upstaged by William Shatner, Megan Fox swearing her undying allegiance to the “Transformers” franchise, and Keith Richards at an award show devoted to horror movies — yeah, it’s Spike TV’s Scream Awards.

The 2009 edition, which went down in typically reserved fashion at the Greek Theatre on Oct. 17, featured all of the above-mentioned hoopla, as well as an impressive roster of stars to hand out and receive the lethal-looking trophies for the best in horror, science fiction and fantasy media. The juggernaut that is “Twilight” was among the big winners of the night, with HBO’s “True Blood” and the J.J. Abrams revamp of “Star Trek” not far behind.

“Twilight” took home four awards, including Best Fantasy Movie, and leads Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart earning Best Actor and Best Actress in a Fantasy Movie or Television Series. Neither was present at the event, but co-star Taylor Lautner claimed his award for Breakout Performance (Male) and later presented exclusive footage from the upcoming sequel, “New Moon,” to the attending throng.

However, “True Blood” co-stars and real-life couple Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin were in attendance to pick up their awards for Best Horror Actor and Actress, as well as for the Sam Trammellcoveted Best TV Show. Alexander Skarsgård was also on hand to net “Blood’s” fourth award of the night for Best Villain.

“Trek” pulled up third with three awards, including Best Science Fiction Movie, Best Director for J.J. Abrams, and the Ultimate Scream, which featured a typically self-lampooning guest appearance by William Shatner, who emerged from the crowd to accept the award from presenter Morgan Freeman and chide Abrams for not including him in the film. The surprise appearance was one of the highlights of the show, matched only by Johnny Depp’s presentation of the Rock Immortal Award to a visibly amused Keith Richards. One may question the presence of Richards at an award show devoted to horror movies (and save those snarky comments about his resemblance to a certain animatronic TV horror anthology host), but his appearance certainly gave the event a quantum boost in cool points.

Other notable guests included Stan (The Man) Lee’s arrival via balloon to accept the Comic-Con Icon Lifetime Achievement Award from “Spider-Man” star Tobey Maguire, a surprisingly heartfelt reunion of the “Battlestar Galactica” cast (Ronald Moore version), and Quentin Tarantino’s enthusiastic (to put it mildly) tribute to director George A. Romero (“Night of the Living Dead” and the upcoming “Survival of the Dead”) who quite rightly received the Scream Mastermind Lifetime Achievement Award. But the show’s most gossip-spasm-inducing moment of the night came when Megan Fox acknowledged the “false reports” regarding her recent, let us say, untoward comments about the “Transformers” franchise and director Michael Bay while picking up her award for Best Sci-Fi Actress. “I’ve always felt that I am a very ordinary part of an extraordinary film,” she said. “These movies took me out of obscurity and they gave me a career and I am completely grateful to everyone involved with this franchise.” That, I believe, is called saving face.

The night was rounded out by the world premiere of clips from a number of upcoming genre pics, including Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” (itself a winner of the night as Most Anticipated Fantasy Film), as well as a preview of ABC’s revamp of “V.” The 2009 Scream Award will air for your edification and enjoyment on Oct. 27 on Spike TV, but should you have plans for the evening, here’s a full list of the winners and equally stellar presenters.
